Scotland's wilderness terrain is world renowned and offers a vast range of locations to suit all who wish to venture into it.
Before heading out into the hills and mountains it is well worth taking the time to learn navigation. The ability to read a map properly will help keep you out of danger as well as allowing you to plan trips in advance with an understanding of terrain, ascent, descent and features you will pass on route. You will be amazed at the amount of information you can get from a map!
Edinburgh and the Lothian's offer a great starting point for introductory navigation courses, we have the Lammermuirs in East Lothian which stretch out to the Moorfoots of Midlothian and also the Pentland Hills.
These hills present the right amount of remoteness for introductory navigation allowing for a wide range of abilities to benefit.
For intermediate navigation courses we will venture further afield, we are lucky to have the Trossachs close by, a wonderful landscape with fantastic views of valleys and lochs. We also have the Grampian Mountains in the Perth & Kinross area, offering an incredible landscape of high mountain ridges and remote passes.
Where ever the course is held you are assured a pleasurable experience from which you will learn valuable skills that will enhance your future walking experiences.

The Introduction to Navigation Course is structured to introduce you to navigational skills based around map and compass work. The following elements are covered during the day. Understanding maps, map to ground, measuring distance, basic compass work, emergency procedures, equipment, outdoor access code, route planning and more.

We are accredited to deliver National Navigation Awards and Young Navigator Star Award (YNSA). The National Navigation Award Scheme is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside.
